Jessica Havens is the best teacher I’ve ever had. She really put the world and the classroom into perspective for me. She made learning a different language fun and possible. Through Senorita Havens, I embarked on a new experience that would change my perspective of the world forever; I went to Mexico with her. I immersed myself into the Mexican Culture outside of the textbooks for 2 weeks and stayed with a family, saw pyramids, and tried my best to speak Spanish. I honestly, could go on and on about the impact Jessica Havens has had on me and who I’ve become. It’s due to her passion for life, love, Spanish, and education which makes her an awesome educator. Now as a graduating College Senior (May 2014) I will be graduating with a degree in Global Studies-International Business: I focus on Spanish & Spanish Speaking Countries. I have lived in Costa Rica, and have been to Nicaragua, and Panama. Honestly, this passion started off in Jessica Haven’s classroom. To conclude, the best teachers aren’t always the one’s who have the best lesson plan prepared it’s sometimes the ones who teaches the students something they can’t learn in the classroom, and that’s what Senorita Havens did for me. -Jessica Newman, former student, Kenwood Academy

Dear Ms. Havens,

I want you to leave this year knowing what a huge role you have played in my development as a student an human being…The way you live your life is admirable, and has been influential to me. I have never had a teacher expect so much out of me not only as a student, but as a person…You innate sense awareness and sensitivity of people and of institutions gave me insight into a world that I didn’t think to try and find, but one that is worth knowing…As I embark on this journey of acting according to my new aware self, I will be thinking of you and all that I owe you. -Thank you letter, 12th grade student, FWP School

Jessica is dynamic facilitator. She led three incredible oppression analysis workshops for my social justice teen program this summer. Jessica is particularly talented at teaching youth how to examine injustice from a root cause perspective and how their social identities relate to their experience with systemic oppression. She uses diverse media sources to engage the youth. Jessica ably responds to questions and push back in a way that further engages the teens in conversation. I look forward to working with her in the future. -Rebecca Katz, Director of Teen Programs at Jewish Council on Urban Affairs
